The story follows two protagonists who are both deaf. Shoya Ishida starts bullying Shoko Nishimiya because she is deaf. Thanks to her new friends, he slowly realizes the effects of his actions and decides to help her out three years after their earlier incident in elementary school. "A Silent Voice" is based on a manga by Yoshitoki Oima that was published from 2012 to 2014 in Weekly Shonen Magazine, about the pain of adolescence and disability through the story of two teenagers, one hearing impaired (Shoya) and one outcast (Shoko). The manga sold over 3 million copies with 11 volumes in print as of this writing. The anime was announced on October 15, 2016. On November 28, it was reported that the series would be split into two cours with 12 episodes due to Shōko's poor character design and that the first cour would have a summer 2017 air date. The series began airing on April 7, 2017 on Fuji TV and NTV. The opening theme is "Fighter" by Eir Aoi while the ending theme is "Koe no Katachi" by Kalafina. Regular cast members include Saori Hayami as Shōko Nishimiya, Yūki Kaneko as Yuzuru Nishiya, Megumi Han as Naoka Ueno, Maaya Uchida as Shōya Ishida, Ikuto Yamashita as Toshi Mashibasa, Ai Kayano as Miyoko Sahara, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Tomohiro Nagatsuka and Yoko Hikasa as Miki Kawai. The series was simulcast by Crunchyroll outside of Asia (excluding Japan), where it aired on Daisuki. The first episode of the series was uploaded to YouTube via the official account on April 7 at 8 p.m. JST by Daisuki. The series premiere received the highest views in the history of the channel, with 1,610,900 views. The series has received an average reception from critics since its release. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a rating of 6.4 out of 10 based on 6 reviews, this is considered "generally favorable". On MyAnimeList it has a rating of 8 out of 10 based on 12 reviews, this is considered "Excellent". The series aired in the United States and Canada on Funimation's simuldub channel, which received a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 55 reviews.The opening theme is by Eir Aoi, while the ending theme is by Kalafina. The single for the latter song was released on April 7, 2017. The individual songs were released onto iTunes and other digital music retailers on July 2, 2017.
